Principles of Design

Balance: Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight in a design.

From – data:image/png

This image shows balance because if you fold it in half, then you have the same image on both sides, this is symmetrical balance

Proximity/Unity: The relative closeness or separation between objects that reflects an assumed relationship between those objects is proximity.

This picture shows proximity because all the dots make a shape but if they weren’t close enough in proximity, they would just look like a bunch of dots with no meaning.

Alignment: is all about organizing elements relative to a line or margin.

This picture shows alignment because all the boxes are the same size and the same distance apart from each other and the top and bottom of the page.

Repetition / Consistency: Repetition is simply the process of repeating elements throughout a design

From: data:image/jpeg

This image shows repetition because the blue and white birds are repeated through the entire image.

Contrast: the arrangement of opposite elements

This image shows contrast because there is one green umbrella and all the rest of the umbrellas are black.

White Space: It is the portion of a page left unmarked

This image uses white space to give the illusion that there are two triangles in the image when there are just circles with v-shapes cut out of them and v-shaped lines.
